YWCA GREATER MIAMI-DADE LAUNCHES
NEW SUMMER LEARNING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM

MIAMI– YWCA Greater Miami-Dade received a grant of $15,000 from the Miami Bayside Foundation to implement a new Summer Early Childhood Education program. This six-week program will provide high-quality summer camp learning to children of low to moderate income families to reduce summer learning loss. The program starts June 17, 2019, and ends July 26, 2019 at the YWCA Gerry Sweet Child Care Center in Overtown, 351 NW 5th St. Miami FL, 33128 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The program will serve 20 children giving priority to those in the transition to Kindergarten. The program is free.

Studies show that over the summer months, children from every grade level stop actively learning, losing much of the gains they made during the school year. Federal data suggests that low-income students lose one to three months of learning during the summer. For many low-income, preschool children transitioning into kindergarten, this means they will start kindergarten not being socially, physically and intellectually ready.

“Nearly 84% of Miami’s single mothers are struggling to make ends meet every day. YWCA Early Childhood programs are closing achievement gaps before they start in elementary school by providing access to high-quality preschool education, thus breaking the cycle of generational poverty,” said Kerry-Ann Royes, CEO of YWCA Greater Miami-Dade, Inc.

The Summer Learning program will consist of two experienced and credentialed teachers who will implement the High Scope Curriculum for preschool children. The summer program will emphasize key kindergarten readiness skills including, but not limited to, writing, letter recognition, beginning sounds, number recognition, and counting, shapes and colors and more.

“Our summer learning program has the potential to bridge the gap, helping children improve and retain skills until the first day of Kindergarten,” said Marta Laos, Division Director of Education Programs at YWCA Greater Miami-Dade, Inc.
